Freeport, Illinois — While Halloween might be a day themed around scary movies and spooky zombie costumes, for one Freeport family Halloween 2018 became a real nightmare as their night of trick-or-treating ended in tragedy.

Like most kids, seven year old JaShaun of Freeport couldn’t wait to go trick-or-treating this year with his family.

His family and he had just begun their night of trick-or-treating when suddenly in a blur, it’s a fast moving car, a shout “JaShaun wait”, and before anyone knew what was happening seven year old JaShaun was laying in the street.

“I stood at my door helpless”,  one witness said.  Another, “we live in the Cul-de-sac on Revere… So scary!”

Vanessa Jinesta who recorded the video above said, “Praying it was not what I thought it was. Sounds like it was.”

JaShaun’s mom says her son was getting ready to cross the street when she noticed a car traveling awfully fast down the road.  “I seen the car coming awfully fast, even a car that was parked on the side of the street that he (JaShaun) was standing in front of seen the car and opened her car door and the driver still failed to slow down for her as well.”

He was released in a wheelchair on Saturday and is now reported to be in good condition.

“It has been a rough couple of days and long nights”, JaShaun’s mom told us. “It’s like having a newborn all over again, up every 2-3 hours, bed baths, helping him eat. I just hate seeing him like this.”

JaShaun will be out of school for at least a week his mom says. JaShaun is in a wheelchair and will be working with crutches as well. He will have a have his cast for at least 10 weeks.

“My thoughts as a mother of a child that was hit by a car on Halloween is that I feel there should be a certain speed limit during the hours of trick or treating as the same way they do during school when children are present. There was no reason the driver was going the speed she was.”

“It was a very scary situation, a parents worst nightmare on Halloween.”

No information about the driver has been provided at this time.
