Freeport Fire Department Provides Update On Morning Fire On W. American

Freeport, Illinois — The City of Freeport Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 411 W. American with possible entrapment. District Chief Brett Hartwig arrived on scene within 3 minutes of dispatch and found a one story single family residence with smoke showing from several points and a resident spraying a garden hose through the side door. It was verified there was nobody remaining inside the house and all occupants were accounted for.

Engine 2 arrived and deployed a hoseline to the side door, extinguishing remaining fire and conducting a primary search of the residence. Fire was contained to the kitchen area with smoke damage throughout. Overhaul was performed to verify there was no fire extension to the attic area. One resident was treated on scene for a minor burn to the arm and refused transport to the hospital. No firefighters were injured, Red Cross was contacted
to assist the residents. Several small animals were found alive and returned to the residents.

Freeport Fire Department Arson Investigator Matt Kile was requested and he began the cause and origin investigation with the assistance from an Accelerant Detection Canine from the Rockford Fire Department. The cause was determined to be misuse of smoking materials.
